He was admitted under exceptional circumstances after having done freelance work starting at age 16\u2014and completing what he called \u201ckind of an engineering apprenticeship.\u201d Bedfordshire awarded Ali its Best Overall Master\u2019s award. His thesis was \u201cCoverage and sensor placement for vehicles on predetermined routes: A greedy heuristic approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Ali received his doctorate, also from Bedfordshire, after defending his thesis on \u201cCryptographic hash-based anonymization of wireless unique identifiers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did actually have a full offer to study computer science at the only private university in the U.K. at the time to\u00a0offer computer science, the University of Buckingham,\u201d he told EE Times. \u201cI did not take up this offer, as it\u00a0would have required me to study full-time,\u00a0which I did not have the\u00a0resources to do without continuing to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, he lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, and works remotely on making banks more efficient\u2014for a fintech firm in London. Ali sees himself eventually headed toward a high-growth tech firm.<\/p>\n<p>His appearance\u2014with a nose ring, neck tattoos and a tattooed flower growing out of his left hairline, is certainly more at home in the free-wheeling tech world than in the button-down boardrooms of banking and finance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Psychological safety for software engineers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ali\u2019s life in the digital world began when he hacked together his first computer from spare parts at a young age.<\/p>\n<p>His first program?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it would have been \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.programiz.com\/java-programming\/hello-world\" target=\"_blank\">Hello World<\/a>!\u2019, probably like most people,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it was in Java.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the years, Ali became adept at not only software engineering but understanding how software engineers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/haystack-books.s3.amazonaws.com\/EngProd+2021+-+A+Review+on+the+State+of+Developer+Productivity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">work<\/a>. In addition to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/why-developers-are-struggling-to-secure-code\/\" target=\"_blank\">developer<\/a> burnout, he\u2019s focused on quality, continuous improvement and psychological safety in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn organizations with strong psychological safety, people do not personally fear making innocent mistakes and are encouraged to take calculated risks,\u201d he said. \u201cLeadership understands that professional engineering discipline requires strong communication, an open reporting approach and avoiding a good-news\u2013only, or closed, culture. Fundamental to developing psychological safety in an engineering team is that the leadership admits to their own fallibility and are open to feedback on their own work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One work he repeatedly turns to is \u201cThe Goal,\u201d a management-oriented novel by Eliyahu Goldratt. The book is about how one can take any system and optimize it through the Theory of Constraints, which posits that any manageable system is limited in achieving goals by a very small number of constraints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High EQ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ali\u2019s interest in ideas for improvement and how to manage people comes as no surprise to Piet von Dongen, a software engineering consultant who lives in the Netherlands. The two men met last year at DevOps Days in Prague, where both were scheduled to speak. They got to know each other over long conversations and beers. Von Dongen describes Ali as having \u201ca certain presence, very calm, stable, curious\u201d and with a high emotional quotient (EQ).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406262\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/piet_von_dongen_july-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1406262 size-medium jetpack-lazy-image\" title=\"Piet von Dongen\" alt=\"Piet von Dongen.\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Piet_von_Dongen_July-2023.jpg?w=226&amp;is-pending-load=1#038;resize=226%2C300\" srcset=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\"\/><noscript><img data-lazy-fallback=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1406262 size-medium\" title=\"Piet von Dongen\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Piet_von_Dongen_July-2023.jpg?w=226&amp;resize=226%2C300\" alt=\"Piet von Dongen.\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Piet von Dongen (Source: Piet von Dongen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe is much more broadly developed than most people I work with,\u201d von Dongen told EE Times. \u201cHe knows the hard stuff, obviously, but has put significant effort into understanding the process, organizational, psychological and complexity side of our field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Von Dongen recounted how Ali described successfully helping his team through a period of uncertainty and hard, sustained work. All the while, he used proven metrics to enable the team members to self-manage and improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost managers, if not all, I know are unable to apply such breadth of knowledge that quickly and successfully, if at all,\u201d he said. In addition, \u201che has a seemingly relentless ability to achieve what he thinks needs to be done. I do not want to go into detail here, because the examples I have are personal and confidential, but he has shown me on at least two occasions that he can and will identify legal or ethical shortcomings in organizations and will address them\u2014even when others would rather sweep them under the carpet.
