He has performed 3D simulations on supercomputers at national facilities. But that often means that he gets just one crack at it, so he\u2019d better have everything set up right\u2014no tweaking allowed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1408906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1408906\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/p79\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1408906 jetpack-lazy-image\" alt=\"Stony Brook University\u2019s Alan Calder.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alan-Calder_Stony-Brook-University_August-2023_SBU.jpg?w=200&amp;is-pending-load=1#038;resize=200%2C300\" srcset=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\"\/><noscript><img fetchpriority=\"high\" data-lazy-fallback=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1408906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alan-Calder_Stony-Brook-University_August-2023_SBU.jpg?w=200&amp;resize=200%2C300\" alt=\"Stony Brook University\u2019s Alan Calder.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1408906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stony Brook University\u2019s Alan Calder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLike climbing a mountain, it was a heroic act to try to get this thing to work,\u201d Calder, professor of astronomy and physics and deputy director of the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) at Stony Brook, told EE Times.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s changed, though, with the $1.5 million HPC that uses the Intel <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/products\/details\/processors\/xeon\/max-series.html\" target=\"_blank\">Xeon CPU Max<\/a> series processors on Hewlett Packard Enterprise <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/us\/en\/hpe-proliant-servers.html?jumpid=ps_9qwixbkfj_aid-520074550&amp;ef_id=CjwKCAjwrranBhAEEiwAzbhNtUZ7vjzdp3TyWV8epa0__ORiDbkZQEgNP5nSAMBjoC_3yTO3RcxgixoCCA0QAvD_BwE:G:s&amp;s_kwcid=AL!13472!3!638432547737!e!!g!!hpe%20proliant%20servers!19096106384!146917719351&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">ProLiant<\/a> DL360 Gen11 servers, both of which are optimized for modeling, simulation, AI and analytics. The tech became available earlier this year, and its use in Stony Brook\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hpcwire.com\/off-the-wire\/stony-brook-university-announces-new-hpc-system-built-by-hpe\/\" target=\"_blank\">IACS<\/a> is the first in U.S. academia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s going to be capable of doing 3D [simulations of] supernovae explosions, and that\u2019s the next big step in our research [for which] we\u2019ve been gearing up for a couple of years,\u201d Calder said. \u201cI\u2019m optimistic that we will be able to perform a lot of science with this new capability that we can\u2019t now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s certainly a lot of science going on at Stony Brook, and there are many users for the new <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/esperanto-pivots-to-hpc-and-generative-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">HPC<\/a> there. (Source: Stony Brook University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Computational science \u2018just exploding\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cComputational science, data-centric science is just exploding, and it\u2019s penetrating every single field, not just in science but scholarship in general,\u201d Robert J. Harrison, director of the IACS, told EE Times.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Calder, one user will be Heather J. Lynch. Her field is ecology and evolution. Her work, in part, contributes to the development of international fishing quotas.<\/p>\n<p>Lynch studies the animal populations in Antarctica by assembling massive amounts of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/5g-iot-satellites-countdown-for-takeoff\/\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a> imagery video collected from drones to count the seals, penguins and various birds along the continent\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she\u2019s got a data-centric pipeline that takes the images, maps them onto terrain models and uses machine learning to try to identify either individuals or other evidence of animals living there, like guano stains and so on,\u201d Harrison said. \u201cAnd so she\u2019s working with datasets that are in the petabytes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Standing in line with Lynch and Calder for the new HPC might be Joel Saltz, VP for clinical informatics at Stony Brook Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Saltz\u2019s work includes creating 3D models of tissue that have been frozen and sliced into thin layers, Harrison said. (Source: Stony Brook University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ookami uses the same processor technology, Fujitsu\u2019s a64fx, as the Japanese supercomputer Fugaku. The Japanese supercomputer was deemed the world\u2019s fastest until it was knocked out of the top spot by a supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, according to Kyodo News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the processor on the Ookami is a low-power Arm processor that was really built for exascale systems, where you have literally 150,000 of these things,\u201d Harrison said. \u201cAnd so power is really the No. 1 concern after performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1408905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1408905\" style=\"width: 207px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/robert-j-harrison_stony-brook-university_august-2023_sbu\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1408905 jetpack-lazy-image\" alt=\"Stony Brook University\u2019s Robert J. Harrison<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/intel-foundry-grows-ecosystem-for-dod-chips\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intel<\/a> came out with the latest-generation Sapphire Rapids processor, along with the high-bandwidth memory attached, Harrison knew it would be a good fit because their apps work great on x86-based processors, he said. And he also knows that the IACS can really take full advantage of their high-bandwidth <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/securing-memory-will-take-more-than-cryptography-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\">memory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMemory bandwidth is really the fundamental bottleneck for lots and lots of applications,\u201d he said. \u201cNot all but many of the important ones for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The computer processors that are in the new system are the next-generation Intel processors, with significant advances in instruction set, especially for machine learning, Harrison said. On their own, they represent only a 20% increase in performance on a per-core basis compared with the older system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the real difference is the high-bandwidth memory, where you can fully utilize all of the cores and get a lot more bang for your buck,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a whole bunch of applications that are running 2\u00d7 to 4\u00d7 faster on this high-bandwidth memory than they would on the older DDR [double-data\u2013rate] memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-tags\">\n<p>        <span itemprop=\"keywords\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/tag\/alan-calder\/\" rel=\"tag\">ALAN CALDER<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/tag\/heather-j-lynch\/\" rel=\"tag\">HEATHER J.
